Dodge History:
Dodge can be traced way back in 1901 to John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge. They had a Bicycle and machine factory at Windsor, Ontario but later moved to Detroit, Michigan. Their products were so much in the automobile industry that they were approached by “Oldsmobiles.” They helped design motor parts for “Oldmobiles.” Henry Ford later approached the Dodge brothers in 1902 to get financing for his automobile company. They generously contributed to the start of Ford Motor Company and also manufactured parts for the first ford vehicles. In fact, all the fords chassis, brakes, engines, transmissions were manufactured by Dodge. This mutual trust between Ford and the Dodge brothers convinced the dodge brothers to start their own company. In 1901,they started the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle company. They started off with 50 dealers for their products and also built the “Old Betsy”, famed for its reliability and durability. To add to their success, they won a lawsuit against Ford Motor Company and also built 249 cars in that same year. They also built trucks for the united states army for use during the first world war and resumed commercial production after the war. However, Dillon Read and Company purchased Dodge and Brothers in 1925 for a record fee of $148 million. It was the largest transaction in that time. In turn, Dillon Read also sold off Dodge to Chrysler Corporation in 1928. Chrysler turned Dodge to be one of its brands specializing primarily in trucks and vans. To date, Dodge accounts for up to 78% of the division’s sales. In 2007,DaimlerChrysler reached a consensus with Cerberus Capital Management to sell of Chrysler Group subsidiary which houses the Dodge division. The Dodge brands were merged with Chrysler brands in Canada so Canadians receive Chrysler Intrepid, Chrysler Dynasty and Chrysler Neon instead of the Dodge Intrepid, Dodge Dynasty and Dodge Neon. However, the decision was changed in 2003 hence of Dodge in the US are now branded as Dodges in Canada.
